HAPPENING
Graham Bond, a pioneering figure of the British R & B scene of the 60s, is killed when he falls in front of a train at Finsbury Park Tube Station. He was 37 years old.
In the wake of drummer Cozy Powell's chart success with his solo single, his group Bedlam break up. Powell proceeds to form his own band, Cozy Powell's Hammer, with Bedlam's vocalist Frank Aiello joining him.
Michael Chapman's new backing band includes a couple of famous names in Keef Hartley (drums) and Rod Clements (bass).
There are another flurry of rumours that The Faces are splitting up, as Rod Stewart's forthcoming solo album becomes the subject of legal action between the Mercury and Warner Brothers labels. Stewart's previous solo output had been released on the former while The Faces' records appeared on the latter.
After their gig at Farnborough Tech College (4th) The Troggs are attacked by Hells Angels. All four members of the group are injured and lead guitarist Richard Moore is rushed to hospital for an emergency operation on a stab wound to his lung.
Pete Townsend personally invites The Sweet to play at The Who's Charlton football stadium gig, however singer Brian Connelly has a dodgy throat and they have to pull out of the show and also their pending UK tour. Dave Mason, another name on the initial line-up, also pulls out and cancels his entire UK tour, claiming that he's contracted to record another album and needs time to write material.
The West Country is in mourning after Adge Cutler, leader of The Wurzels, is killed in a car crash near the Severn Bridge, as he returned home after a gig in Hereford.
The Liverpool Scene re-form and head out onto the road.
It's confirmed that Beck Bogart & Appice have split up.
Bruce Thomas quits the Sutherland Brothers & Quiver band. Gavin Sutherland switches from guitar to bass to cover his exit. Thomas later performs bass duties with Elvis Costello & The Attractions.
Ex-If vocalist JW Hodkinson joins Daryl Way's Wolf.
Gary Moore leaves Thin Lizzy and the groupexpands to a four piece with the addition of two guitarists who are, according to the NME, Andy Gee and John Cann.
