HAPPENING
David Bowie finishes his British tour with a show at Hammersmith Odeon (3rd). Jeff Beck joins Bowie & the Spiders onstage but this is overshadowed by Bowie’s announcement to the audience that he is retiring. In the outbreak of hysteria that follows among Bowie’s fans, few realise that in fact it’s only Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust stage character that is being retired.
Slade's drummer Don Powell is seriously injured in a car crash. Frank Lea, brother of bassist Jim, stands in for Powell at Slade's gig in Douglas, Isle of Man.
It's rumoured that Paul Rodgers of Free is to be Ian Gillan's replacement as vocalist in Deep Purple, but Rodgers denies this. Bass player Roger Glover also quits Purple. Glover is replaced by Glenn Hughes of Trapeze.
Another Purple rumour has Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Paice forming a trio with Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy. In fact, the three musicians had recorded together some time before but Lynott was now committed to Lizzy.
Brian Eno quits Roxy Music to pursue a solo career.
Curved Air disband, with keyboard player/ violinist Eddie Jobson slated to replace Eno in Roxy Music.
The "Jobson For Roxy" situation apparently causes both Andy Mackay and Phil Manzanera to threaten their departure from the group. However, all is quickly and amicably sorted out.
Family announce that they will break up following a farewell tour in the autumn.
Mick Ralphs quits Mott the Hoople.
An emotional Ray Davies announces on stage at the White City Festival that he is quitting the music business. Davies suffers a nervous breakdown after his wife and children leave him.
Vocalist Paul Williams quits Jon Hiseman's Tempest because of "diversity of musical opinions". He is not replaced.
T Rex add a guitarist, ex-Sunshine man Jack Green.
Stealers Wheel shrink from a six piece band down to a core duo of Joe Egan and Gerry Rafferty.
The Strawbs announce a new line-up, with John Hawken (keyboards), Chas Cronk (bass) and Rod Coombes (drums) joining Dave Cousins and Dave Lambert.
Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come split up.
Ex-Procol Harum & Freedom member Bobby Harrison forms a new band, Snafu, featuring several familiar names including Mick Moody (ex-Juicy Lucy), Pete Solley (ex-Paladin) and Colin Gibson (ex Skip Bifferty).
After disbanding his Jackson Heights group, ex-Nice bassist Lee Jackson forms a Nice-style Progressive trio, Refugee, with ex-Nice drummer Brian Davison and Swiss keyboard virtuoso Patrick Moraz (ex-Mainhorse)
