HAPPENING
Paul McCartney and Wings play a series of unannounced live shows at Universities around Britain. Meanwhile, the BBC bans the group’s new single for being ‘politically controversial’.
A power cut causes Pink Floyd’s concert at the Free Trade Hall, Manchester to be abandoned after 25 minutes. Many concerts around the country are cancelled owing to the power shortages.
Stars, featuring Syd Barrett, Twink and Jack Monck, make their live debut in Cambridge, however Syd beats a hasty retreat after a couple of chaotic performances.
Reg King, ex-vocalist with The Action quits the Blossom Toes spin-off group, BB Blunder, after refusing to attend a gig.
Drummer Phil Howard quits Soft Machine and is replaced by John Marshall. Both men are featured on separate sides of the fifth Soft Machine album.
Dave MacRae joins Matching Mole, doubling keyboards with David Sinclair. However, this line-up only lasts for the duration of a short tour of the Low Countries, following which Sinclair quits.
Chris Farlowe joins Atomic Rooster as vocalist, replacing Pete French who moves to America.
Guitarist Chris Spedding quits the Jack Bruce Band because of musical differences.
Steamhammer drummer Mick Bradley dies suddenly of leukaemia aged just 25.
Dave Mattacks quits Fairport Convention because he can’t face further touring. Tom Farnell is the replacement drummer.
Mike Wedgwood joins Curved Air on bass as replacement for Ian Eyre.
Audience add two new members to replace the departed Keith Gemmill. They are Nick Judd on keyboards and Patrick Charles on saxes.
Led Zeppelin are voted Top Group in the world by Disc readers. T Rex win the Top Group in Britain award. The Who are Top Live Group and Lindisfarne are “Brightest Hope for ‘72”.
Rhythm guitarist Pat Fairley quits performing with Marmalade. He plans to concentrate on the band’s business affairs.
The new Jethro Tull album is supposedly based on a poem by 8-year old Gerald Bostock. Several music reporters fall for the joke!
Bell + Arc officially split up. The group’s existing concert commitments are fulfilled by vocalist Graham Bell with a pick-up band.
John Cann and Paul Hammond's post Atomic Rooster band Bullet encounter legal problems with their name owing to the existence of an American band also called Bullet. "Amicable discussions" are held to resolve the matter, and eventually the British group are re-named Hard Stuff.
Hawkwind are robbed of a substantial amount of equipment including amplifiers and microphones, forcing them to cancel several concerts.
The proposed Pop Festival at Bekesbourne, near Canterbury is called off after an injunction is obtained by local residents. As a consequence of this, the residents of Weeley begin a successful action to prevent a repeat of the previous year’s August Bank Holiday Weeley Festival.
